What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format on iPhones and iPads. It uses HEIF compression to store photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG with the same or better quality.

The problem is that HEIC isn't supported everywhere — Windows, many websites, and older software expect JPEG or PNG. Converting to PNG gives you a widely-compatible, lossless version of your photo.
